Winter 2022

Dried Grasses

As spring approaches, dried grasses seem out of context.  More of an autumn thing than a spring thing.  By autumn, grass seeds have fallen to the ground or blown on the wind.  Animals made meals out of the seed.

If you have plans for dried grasses... collect the grass flowers and seed heads in the green. That varies depending on where you live.  In zone 7a, it's May and June.

I elaborate on the drying process in my essay Dried Florals.  It's the epitome of lazy DIY.

Most people with lawns won't have the luxury of letting their grass go to seed.  People frown upon unmown lawns.  But there's no shortage of unkept places on civilization's edge.  Some lovely, tenacious plants grow in these places.  As I've said before.

Who'd ever guess those brown fuzzy balls were glowing light purple ageratum flowers?

The sphere of tiny bulbils in this arrangement is wild onion grass .

Dried grasses with fluffy seeds heads lay flat on a black paper background.

Shape and texture define flower arrangements rather than color.
